In soccer losing 3-0 during the first half, is like trailing by 25 points at halftime in an NBA game. In this particular case, trailing by 25 and against the Detroit Pistons from the bad boys era.
That good, brutal and strong defensively was that Milan.
On the field, all seemed lost for the English team. Liverpool did not have the parts needed to assemble the puzzle presented to them by the Italian team. It seemed to be a real enigma, a indecipherable riddle. It was easier to give all for lost, learn from the experience and wait for another chance.
Suddenly a song broke into the locker room of both teams. Do not mind that come from a far place, the sound was loud enough to be heard clearly by both teams. It was Liverpool fans who didn't give up. Over thirty thousand fans in the stadium singing You never walk alone, perhaps the best song of any sport (and I'm not a fan of Liverpool, I prefer Barcelona). For them this hymn was more than a song, was a philosophy. A way of life. So in the darkest moments of the english team, their fans reminded them that they were not alone. They were walking beside them and they still believed in them, regardless the outcome. Despair became hope. From the outside the problems don't look that difficult.
It took them nine minutes of the second half to the English team to score the first goal, six more to tie. Only took them 15 minutes to turn the matter on their behalf. The fans were able to solve the riddle, it was no enigma. If they had the desire, faith and confidence that acting together would overcome any adversity, they could succeed. That was the piece of the puzzle that the team needed to win, and they did. In the end and after 2 overtimes, Liverpool F.C. beat A.C. Milan on penalty kicks. The little one get reminded that he was not that little, he was just on his knees.
Everyone has problems. Difficult times. Situations that appear not to have exit or solution. Where imagination and ideas do not appear. If we step back and look at the situation, we can probably see beyond the riddle, beyond the enigma and beyond the puzzle.

At that point, we have already overcome the problem.
Reinaldo, I love your profound example of the big picture dynamic and teamwork. Even the fans are part of the team mentality and most things are better accomplished when done by a team. Even Surgeons don't work alone. They may be doing the surgery, but without the nurses, anesthesiologist, and support staff the outcome would not be the same.
ReplyDeleteYou have peaked my curiosity, and I look forward to following your blog.

I am very sorry to have been slow to respond to your message (I did not realize that he had received a comment). I'm glad you like it. As you say ((and I'm sure as a soldier better than anyone you know) we all need to work together to achieve results. Here, even the fans cooperated. Not only supported his team, causing the opponent feel doubt. One of the most amazing things (and I forgot to mention) is that almost none of the fans were English. They were people of Istanbul, which followed the Liverpool. That to me was incredible. Again, thanks a lot for your review.
